General Tour Questions:

  • Where does the tour meet? The meeting spot is at John’s Hole Forebay Park Dock (1417 River Pkwy, Idaho Falls). Directions
  • When are the tours offered? The tours are offered on the first two weekends of July: July 5-7 and July 12-14.
  • What does the tour include? The tour includes a short, scenic ferry ride, historical insights from a knowledgeable guide, and the chance to explore a unique historic island.
  • How long is the tour? The tour lasts approximately 45 minutes.
  • Is parking available? Parking is limited near the dock. It’s recommended to arrive 15-20 minutes early to secure a spot.
  • Can I bring food and drink? Please keep all food and drink tucked away during your ferry ride and island tour.
  • Do I have to stay with the tour group? Yes, all participants must stay with the tour group. Please, do not wander, and be sure to avoid the parameter of the island. Falling in the river could be life threatening.
  • Do MOI members get a discount? We are unable to provide a member discount for this event, since the tour is priced to cover operational costs, including ferry transportation.
  • Are tickets refundable? All ticket sales are final.¬†

Suitability and Safety:

  • Is this tour appropriate for children? Yes, children are welcome, but all children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. This tour is not recommended for infants, as the tour is not stroller or wagon accessible, and baby carrying is not recommended due to uneven terrain, which poses a tripping hazard. Please be sure to supervise your children. The river is dangerous.
  • What about accessibility? This tour is not ADA compliant and requires good mobility due to uneven terrain and ferry boarding/disembarking. Tour is not wheelchair accessible.
  • What should I wear? Closed-toe shoes with good traction are highly recommended for the uneven terrain. Long pants are also a good idea.
  • Are life jackets provided? Yes, life jackets are required for everyone on the tour and will be provided in all sizes (infants-adults). Children 14 and under must wear their life jackets on the boat and island. Participants 15 years and older must have a life jacket but don’t need to wear it unless they prefer to.
  • Please note: Any guests who appear to be intoxicated will be asked to forgo the tour.

  • How big is Keefer’s Island? The island is about 1.85 acres in size.
  • Why is it called Keefer’s Island? The island is named after Fred W. Keefer, who filed a mining claim on the island in the 1930s and built a cabin that still stands today.
