Greg Stoddard
Note: This is one in a series of spotlights on MOI staff members who have been named a “Keefer Fellow,” a monthly program aimed at recognizing staffers for their contributions to the museum and the community. This month, our Facilities Manager and longest-serving employee.
Q: Explain what you do at the museum in 20 words or less.
Greg: Maintaining the building to create an environment for everyone to work in.
Q: What’s a museum-related accomplishment that you’re particularly proud of?
Greg: The renovation of the Carr addition in Winter 2020, especially the polished concrete floors, which I think are striking.
Q: What do you do for fun?
Greg: I love to golf. I have a passion for the links — not only the sport, but to be outdoors on a gorgeous fairway with flora all about.
Q: What would you do for a career if you weren’t doing this (and if money were no object)?
Greg: There was a time in life where I was going to go into film and be a cinematographer or write screenplays. I never did it, but I think I would still want to.
Q: What’s the weirdest / most interesting past job you’ve had?
Greg: Filling plastic bottles with a gasoline additive called XB-90 by hand with [former MOI Executive Director] Dave Pennock when we were in college. It was a startup.
Q: Name a setback in your life that has ended up being a good thing.
Greg: I had one year when someone very close to me passed away, I had some other personal problems, and as a result, I got a lot stronger in my faith.
Q: What’s something – large or small, useful or not – that you’re really good at?
Greg: I used to be really good at writing letters, back when people did that more.
Q: What were you like in high school?
Greg: Fairly shy, not socially outgoing, although I had a group of friends that I still have to this day.
Q: What’s your favorite book, movie, and TV show?
Greg:
- Book: Time for the Stars, a not-well-known sci-fi book by Robert Heinlein
- Movie: probably Good Will Hunting or Sideways
- TV show: The Andy Griffith Show or Seinfeld
Q: Tell us something about you that might surprise us.
Greg: I was a member of a ballroom dance team for a couple of years. I was actually interested in disco. Saturday Night Fever had just come out and was all the rage. So I found this instructor for that, and she asked me to be on the ballroom team.
I remember nothing. It’s not like riding a bike.
