Channeling My Inner “MacGyver” To Preserve INL History: Recent Obsolete Media Digitization Projects

Obsolete media formats contain an untapped gold mine of valuable history waiting to be discovered and transferred to accessible formats. However, preparing to digitize obsolete media can seem like a daunting task, especially given the scarcity of resources and original equipment. Figuring out how and where to start can seem impossible so Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) Archives and Special Collections staff developed a set of five questions to help determine how best to proceed with digitization projects.
Join Austin Schulz to discuss common questions in digitizing obsolete media and the unique challenges that require some “MacGyvering” to unlock valuable history and expand accessibility through digital preservation. He will present two projects recently completed to recover valuable INL history from obsolete media.
About the speaker: Austin Schulz received his master’s in history from Western Oregon University in 2010 while developing a career in archives and working as a reference archivist at the Oregon State Archives. Schulz became a certified archivist in 2012 after passing the Academy of Certified Archivists exam and later a regional trainer for the Library of Congress Digital Preservation Outreach and Education program. From 2017 to 2019, Schulz taught archival science at Western Oregon University as an adjunct professor. In 2019 he began his position as Idaho National Laboratory’s first certified archivist, charged with establishing an archival program to preserve the lab’s history and share it with the public.
