Join author and historian Rick Just as he shares the remarkable true story of Farris Lind, the quirky marketing mastermind behind Stinker Stations. Learn how Lind’s bold personality and daring sense of humor turned a gas station chain into a statewide legend. From his rowdy youth and time as a WWII fighter pilot instructor, to a crash-prone crop-dusting career, Lind lived large—until polio left him a quadriplegic in his 30s. But even that didn’t stop him. From inside an iron lung, Lind continued to run the most successful gas station chain in Idaho for two decades, earning a national award from the U.S. president. Discover the story behind those cheeky roadside signs—and how one First Lady helped bring them down. Funny, fearless, and truly one-of-a-kind, Farris Lind’s story is Idaho history at its boldest.

About the speaker: Rick Just wrote and produced the official Centennial radio series, “Idaho Snapshots.” He has written or edited 13 books, both fiction and non-fiction. Rick specializes now in Idaho history. He writes a weekly column for Boise Weekly, a subscription Idaho history newsletter, and speaks often on the subject. For 30 years, Rick worked for the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation. He is the president of Friends of Idaho State Parks. Rick founded the Presto Preservation Association, which is devoted to preserving the history of Idaho Pioneers Nels and Emma Just. The association restores and preserves the fourth home the Justs built on their property along the Blackfoot River. The 1887 brick home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. Rick has published the family magazine, Presto Press, biannually since 1986. Rick Just served as the Idaho State Senator from District 15 in 2023 and 2024.
